Adkins impressed by Hooper

Scunthorpe United boss Nigel Adkins has praised summer signing Gary Hooper, who scored twice in the 4-0 pre-season victory over Grimsby Town.

Hooper joined the Iron from Southend United, having risen to prominence during a prolific loan spell with Hereford United last season.

Adkins told the club's official website: "I think Gary is a top player, I first spotted him when playing for Leyton Orient against us when we won the League One championship and he was a thorn in our side that day.

"We've kept track of him since then, as we do with several players and the moment Martin Paterson left, that very next day we put a phone call in.

"We pursued it and managed to bring him into this football club."

Adkins played down the fact that Hooper left the field against the Mariners, with the striker having suffered a minor knee injury.
