Scunthorpe United are sweating on an ankle injury sustained by defender David Mirfin during a pre-season clash with a Jersey XI.

The 24-year-old is awaiting scans on the injury, but Iron boss Nigel Adkins is fearful that Mirfin has sustained a broken ankle.

He told the Evening Telegraph: "The ankle is badly swollen and at the moment the signs do not look good.

"We are treating it in the same way as a break and making sure David does not put any weight on the ankle.

"We will give it another 48 hours to settle down and assess it again then.

"At the moment we are treating it as a 'worst-case scenario', but hoping that it is not."
