Adkins cites cup final defeat

Manager Nigel Adkins believes Scunthorpe United's play-off final victory over Millwall was the result of previous heartbreak at Wembley.

Martyn Woolford's dramatic late strike secured a 3-2 win on Sunday and promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.

Just two months ago, the Iron lost the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy by the same scoreline to Luton Town at Wembley.

"We got in a circle after that game and got rid of that horrible feeling and we played some good football after that defeat and showed character yet again to stay in the race," said Adkins.

"At the end of the day the fortune has favoured us in what was our 60th game of the season.

"We've assembled a group of players who will now have a chance to play in the Championship.

"It's a fantastic achievement to bounce straight back."
