Skipper Byrne happy to deputise
Byrne is poised to abandon his normal duties at right-back and deputise for Jones (groin) and Mirfin (ankle) who are doubtful for Saturday's season opener at Cardiff.
"If it's at centre-half then I have no problems with that," Byrne told the Scunthorpe Telegraph.
"If that's where the gaffer wants me to play then I'll be happy to and the same goes for full-back."
Record signing Jones suffered his injury in Tuesday's friendly defeat to Wolves while Mirfin went over on his ankle during the club's pre-season tour of Jersey.
