Spireites hit back to earn replay

Chesterfield produced an inspired second-half fightback to force an FA Cup third-round replay after a 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

With a trip to Derby awaiting the winner, the visitors looked to be up against it at the interval as they trailed 2-0.

Young Chelsea loanee defender Alex Davey fired Scunthorpe in front after 18 minutes with his first goal in senior football.

It was an excellent finish, curling a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box from a half-cleared corner.

Chesterfield hit back with a period of strong pressure without being able to find anything to test home keeper Sam Slocombe.

It was against the run of play when Scunthorpe made it 2-0 in the 44th minute as striker Lyle Taylor capitalised on a defensive blunder to race through the middle and slam his shot past keeper Tommy Lee.

In the second half, Chesterfield put the home goal under siege as they tried to get back into the game.

It took two brilliant early saves from man of the match Slocombe to deny them, keeping out a close-range header from striker Armand Gnanduillet and a blistering shot from Sam Clucas.

Chesterfield did pull a goal back in the 70th minute when Eoin Doyle reduced the arrears from the penalty spot after Gareth Roberts had been upended.

They equalised in the 85th minute when substitute Jay O'Shea applied the finishing touch to a ball into a crowded box from Roberts.

Both teams might then have snatched a winner in a pulsating finish.
