Scunthorpe ease to victory against Portsmouth

First-half goals from Lee Novak and Duane Holmes earned Scunthorpe a comfortable 2-0 victory over Portsmouth.

After a bright start the Iron, and Novak, had already been denied by the woodwork when the former Charlton striker stroked a 12th minute shot into the far corner after being teed up nicely by Jordan Clarke.

Pompey should have levelled after half an hour but giant striker Oliver Hawkins headed wide from an inviting ball into the middle by Jamal Lowe.

It was a miss the visitors were made to pay for three minutes later, when Holmes reacted quickest to a high ball on the edge of edge by bouncing home a volley.

From that point on the Iron more or less went through the motions, staying solid and allowing Portsmouth plenty of possession outside of their penalty area.

A couple of long-range efforts, each of which was off target, was the closest the visitors came to a consolation, as Scunthorpe eased to victory and a fifth clean sheet in six league matches.
