Orient ease pressure on Slade

Leyton Orient eased the pressure on manager Russell Slade with a deserved 2-1 victory at struggling Scunthorpe.

A goal early in each half from defender Scott Cuthbert and winger Jobi McAnuff earned the Londoners only their second win of the season.

Still unbeaten on their travels, the visitors made a flying start, with a goal after just three minutes.

It came from the first corner of the game which Dean Cox delivered from the left for Cuthbert to outjump the Scunthorpe defence and head home from close range.

Orient continued to look lively as the home side laboured well below par.

Scunthorpe failed to get anything on target in the first half to test goalkeeper Gary Woods

After Lloyd James had gone close to making it 2-0 for Orient at the start of the second half, it was Scunthorpe who equalised in the 49th minute when midfield man Matt Sparrow swept a first time shot into the bottom corner after a deep left wing cross rom Gary McSheffrey had been laid into his path by Madden.

But Orient were back in front just two minutes later when McAnuff netted from close range after more poor defending by the home side had failed to deal with a left-wing cross.

Sparrow had a chance to restore parity again in the 78th minute but delayed his shot and saw it blocked.

It was Orient who might have then added to their lead with Darius Henderson and substitute Jay Simpson both going close to making it 3-1 in the closing stages.
