Gillespie gets Gas last-gasp point

Substitute Steven Gillespie's last-minute equaliser rescued Bristol Rovers a point in a 1-1 draw at high-flying Scunthorpe.

Gillespie raced in to add the finishing touch to a low, right-wing cross from full-back Michael Smith to stun the home crowd.

Leading scorer Sam Winnall pounced with his 18th goal of the season for the in-form Iron who stretched their unbeaten run to 17 games but fell two points behind League Two leaders Chesterfield, who were 4-1 winners at Cheltenham.

Winnall struck in the 22nd minute with a near-post header from a perfect left-wing cross from Gary McSheffrey.

Rovers suffered an injury blow on the stroke of half-time when Alan Gow was carried off on a stretcher with suspected knee ligament damage after falling awkwardly in the box as he tried to get in a shot.

The visitors enjoyed a good patch early in the second half as they chased an equaliser and almost got one in the 59th minute when Chris Beardsley saw his goal-bound effort well turned away by goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

Scunthorpe went close to making it 2-0 when Winnall bounced a header against the crossbar from a cross by full-back Eddie Nolan.

Midfielder David Syers, who scored a hat-trick at the weekend, then thundered a shot just inches wide for the home side.

But hard-working Rovers rescued a deserved point with Gillespie's late equaliser.
