Cod Army leave it late

Fleetwood struck two late goals within 10 minutes to secure a deserved 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe.

The late salvo means the Cod Army have maximum points from their opening three games, but leaves struggling Scunthorpe still searching for their first point.

The home side made six changes from the starting line-up that crashed 4-0 at home to Preston on Saturday with three new signings in the squad.

There were debuts for goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik signed on loan from Peterborough, and right-back Luke O'Neill loaned from Burnley, while on the bench was new striker Billy McKee, signed from Burton Albion.

It made them compact and more competitive but they struggled to create much as an attacking force.

It was Fleetwood who should have broken the deadlock when David Ball fluffed a close range header from an inviting left-wing cross by Josh Morris.

The visitors pressed strongly again in the second half and were rewarded in the 70th minute when Jamie Proctor was on hand at the far post to turn home a low right-wing cross.

Ten minutes later it was 2-0 when midfield man Gareth Evans headed home a free-kick from Steven Crainey.

Scunthorpe did come close in the closing minutes, but a header from Niall Canavan came back off the woodwork and a shot from Jennison Myrie-Williams was scrambled off the line.
