Magpies steal Iron win

Substitute Zeli Ismail snatched a 89th-minute winner from the penalty spot to give Notts County a 1-0 victory at Scunthorpe.

It was desperately tough luck on the Iron, who had produced one of their most promising home displays of the season.

There were chances at both ends in a lively affair, and it was the hosts who created most of them, with Luke Williams making his debut on loan from Middlesbrough in an attacking role.

In the first half, striker Lyle Taylor was twice denied by Notts goalkeeper Roy Carroll.

When Carroll was beaten in the 26th minute, the woodwork rescued County as a header from Gary McSheffrey thudded against the foot of a post following a pin-point cross by left-back Marcus Williams.

The visitors too had their moments, with midfielder Liam Noble curling a 25-yard effort just inches wide before striker Shaun Harrad brought the best out of keeper Bobby Olejnik with a stinging shot from just inside the box.

Play continued to swing from end to end in the second half. It was Scunthorpe again who looked the most dangerous, with Taylor and Paddy Madden both going close.

County had plenty of possession but offered little threat until Stephen McLaughlin won them a 89th-minute penalty when he was brought down in the box by Olejnik. Ismail held his nerve to score and stretch Notts' unbeaten run to 11 games.
