Paul Reid, the Scunthorpe captain, has been ruled out of Tuesday night's Capital One Cup trip to Derby, and is unlikely to feature at Crawley on Saturday.

Reid broke four bones in his right hand during the pre-season training camp in the Republic of Ireland.

“Reidy’s not going to be ready for the game. When the cast gets taken off we’ll see how it is but he won’t play on Tuesday night," Alan Knill, the Iron manager, the the club's official website.

“He’s probably not going to be ready for Saturday (against Crawley Town) either but we’ll see how it is.”

Reid warned last week that he would not return to action before getting the all clear from his specialist, after saying he could lose the use of his hand altogether if the breaks do not heal properly.

Niall Canavan will also sit out the tie as he is on international duty with Ireland U21s in a European Championship qualifier against Turkey which takes place at the same time.
