Putting our trust in supporters

Scunthorpe United fans who would like a greater say in the club is being run are invited to an open meeting at Glanford Park on Thursday.

The event, to be held in the executive area of the stadium from 7pm (Thurs Dec 15) is being hosted by a working group hoping to create a supporters trust.

The not-for-profit trust - currently going by the title of the Iron Trust - would seek to build up a shareholding in the club, allowing the group to ensure a supporters voice is heard at shareholder meetings and - potentially - take part in the decision making process at board level.

It would be a democratic organisation, with an elected board and voting on key issues as directed by its membership.

"The theory is that supporters are the lifeblood of any club, but at the moment there is no substantial way for fans to make their voices heard other than booing when things are not going well," said Luke Thornhill, a member of the working group who have planned Thursday's meeting.

"We believe a trust could help bridge that gap. Initially we hope to build a shareholding to enable us to represent members at events like AGMs, while also injecting some extra money into the club through share purchases.

"We have been encouraged by the help we have had from the club, right up to the chairman, who want us to succeed and become an established part of the club. We hope to be in a position to present a supporter voice to the board at regular intervals, but first we want to establish a voice."

That voice will come if attendees vote for the creation of a trust on Thursday evening, giving the working group the mandate to create the trust.

"We will not be in a position to offer full membership on Thursday, but will record details of interested members and hope volunteers come forward to help shape the trust," added Thornhill.

"The volunteers so far have all been excellent, helping get us to this point, but we will welcome all the help we can get and could even have our first elected chairperson or board members in the room."
