Thompson sinks Latics

Substitute Gary Thompson grabbed the winner as struggling Scunthorpe earned a precious 2-1 victory at Oldham.

All the drama came in the last 20 minutes at Boundary Park, with both sides ending the game with 10 men.

Scunthorpe worked early chances for Jon Parkin and David Mirfin, while Oldham's Shefki Kuqi forced a reaction save from Sam Slocombe.

The Latics then took control, but Kuqi's 10-yard drive clipped the bar, Slocombe saved brilliantly from Tom Adeyemi and they were denied a penalty for Damien Mozika's challenge on Kieran Lee.

Oldham's Keanu Marsh-Brown wasted a clear chance and Filipe Morais hit the post, but Scunthorpe scored after 73 minutes when Mirfin met Josh Walker's left-wing corner with a powerful header from eight yards.

Oldham levelled four minutes later as Morais hit a right-wing cross which sailed over Slocombe's head and in off the back post.

Thompson grabbed the winner after 80 minutes, heading across keeper Alex Cisak from eight yards after a pinpoint ball from Walker.

There was still time for ugly late scenes when Marsh-Brown received a straight red card for his two-footed lunge on Walker, whose angry reaction earned him a second booking.
