Laws, reinstalled as Iron boss for a third spell on Monday, took charge of training for the first time on Monday along with assistant Russ Wilcox.
"The players were first-class. I had a meeting with everybody at the football club about what our intentions are and abut how we can achieve the turnaround, about being positive around the football club," he said.
"What we have to do is getting the football side right. The players were good on Tuesday morning, they had to work hard and understand the change is necessary. They've listened to what we've had to say and the philosophy of how we're going to approach it, they all agreed it is what had to be done
"There's a squad of players that are more than capable of getting out of this mire. What they need now is a little bit of direction. They've got used to losing, which is not a good habit."
That run of form has seen huge gaps appearing on the terrace, with a lowest League crowd of 2,671 for the loss to Preston and 752 for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at the hands of Notts County.
But Laws called for fans to come back as he bids to turn the club's fortunes around on the pitch.
"Without their help and everybody pulling in the same direction we'll have no chance," he said.
"If everybody gets back and unites, there's a real chance of being successful with it. We can't have anybody pulling in a different direction.
"It's been that way for the last 18 months on downward spiral, and it's a tough one to turn round. But I believe the players here want to get it right.
"It's almost like a runaway train. They've been in such a habit of losing it gets to the point where it becomes difficult, so we almost have to derail it, change its direction and hopefully put it on the right track.
"That is something that is not going to happen overnight, there's no magic dust I'm going to sprinkle over their heads or a light switch that's going to switch the players on"
Coaches Chris Brass and Neil Cutler, who followed previous manager Alan Knill from Bury, remain at the club.
"We'll utilise their strengths here. They know the players here and we'll see how it pans out," added Laws.
"They're willing to give everything they've got. We're not giving any long-term deals to anybody, it's a case of seeing how things go. The most important thing is everybody is focused and pushing for the right things."
