Brian Laws, the Iron boss, did not reveal which members of the squad were suffering from the sickness bug that had hit the team.
“What it does mean is that Tranmere will not have a clue what we are going to do, because if I am honest at the moment, neither do we,” he told the club's official website.
"As is always the case it is the players who are in the team week in week out who are affected.
"It is always the way because they are the ones most susceptible, they are the ones pushing their bodies the hardest.”
Winger Mark Duffy is apparently unaffected by the bug, having trained on Friday.
He jarred a knee after slipping in the Boxing Day defeat to Sheffield United and was withdrawn shortly afterwards.
That move was purely precautionary and Laws expects Duffy to take his place in the struggling Iron’s starting XI at Prenton Park.
Duffy was not the only one to pick up an injury in the 3-0 loss to the Blades as captain Paul Reid left Bramall Lane with a cut under an eye.
Reid has been playing with a broken nose but Laws expects his skipper to soldier on once more.
Tranmere boss Ronnie Moore could name an unchanged side, after recording their first league win in seven outings against Crewe on Boxing Day to keep them in the top two.
James Wallace, Rovers captain, is back in contention and could play a part despite missing out against the Railywaymen.
The midfielder was earmarked for a potential return on Wednesday but failed a late assessment having just returned from a medial knee ligament injury.
Forward Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro (broken metatarsal) and winger Abdulai Bell-Baggie (lateral knee ligament) remain sidelined.
