Ireland call means Canavan misses Derby trip

Scunthorpe defender Niall Canavan will miss the Capital One Cup trip to Derby after being named in the Republic of Ireland U21 squad.

The centre-back is in the Republic squad that will take on Turkey in Sligo on Tuesday August 14, the same night the Iron will be at Pride Park.

"The Turkey game is massive for us. We have three very big games left in the group but we have to pick up where we left off against Italy in June," said the Republic's U21 coach Noel King. "We will be looking for the Sligo public to come out and give us the same fabulous support we've had at the Showgrounds so far in the tournament and I'd love to see supporters coming from further afield to support the lads." "A win over Turkey would secure us at least second place and a potential play-off place. What's important is victory in this, our last home game, so we can build on that for the remaining two matches of the group."

The squad also includes Everton's Shane Duffy, who spent part of last season on loan at the Iron.

Giovanni Trapattoni, the Republic's senior coach, considered including Duffy in his senior squad for a friendly against Serbia but allowed him to remain with the U21s for this key competitive fixture.
