Hayes hopes cup can lift confidence

Hayes scored the only goal against former club Barnsley to set up a fourth-round tie with Premier League giants Manchester City and the 26-year-old believes the competition is a welcome distraction from the league campaign.

"It's a great feeling to get through," Hayes told the club's official website. "We were all disappointed to lose our last two league games but I felt we did well on Saturday and deserved to go through.

"Any win is massive because if you keep losing week in, week out, your confidence will go and your morale dips.

"It doesn't feel good as a player to lose but any win is great and hopefully we can go on a little run now."
