Byrne/Hughes under the knife

Scunthorpe defenders Cliff Byrne and Andy Hughes have had surgery in a bid to cure injury problems. Club captain Byrne has not played since January due to a back problem, but is likely to be fit for the start of the 2011/12 season. "We're hopeful that he'll be back, if not at the start of pre-season, then some way into pre-season," Iron manager Alan Knill told the club's official website. Hughes has also gone under the knife to heal the hernia which kept him out of the final three games of the season. Garry Thompson is expected to return for pre-season having missed much of last season with a knee problem, as is goalkeeper Josh Lillis. Lillis, who suffered a hip injury against Portsmouth on the final day of the season, and Thompson have both been visiting the club during the summer to work on rehabilitation.
