Adkins makes case for the defence

The Scunthorpe boss has targeted a better defensive record next season as he looks to help the Iron maintain their status in the second tier, something they failed to do a year ago. Veteran stopper Andy Crosby, who is now 36, held their defence together during their successful play-off campaign, but Adkins is aware of the need to bring fresh blood to Glanford Park. "It's fair to say that a big focus to start off with will be trying to make sure we don't concede as many goals," he told the Scunthorpe Telegraph. "We're not going to rush into things but negotiations are ongoing in certain areas." Adkins is also hopeful that chairman Steve Wharton will fund his dealings during the off-season and added: "As manager I have to try and push for as much money as I can to strengthen the squad."
