Young Guns Return

Cowdenbeath had to start the current season without two of their brightest prospects, but that is about to change. The Blue Brazil's nineteen year-old midfielder, Danny Mackay,  has been sidelined for over 17 months while 21 year-old defender, Dene Droudge, has been out of action for six months, both with cruciate problems. Danny established himself as a regular in the central midfield area during the 2008-2009 season, aged only 17, and was a very prominent figure in the run which took Cowden to second top in the Barrs Irn Bru Third Division. But in the first leg of the play-off semi-final tie the Leslie based youngster damaged his left knee and he had to watch from the stand as Cowden lost the final on penalties. Then they were promoted to the Second Division through Livingston’s problems and he watched as the Blue Brazil took the division by storm and raced into the top two positions. Dene became a fixture in the Cowden team last season either at right-back, or centre-back when needed, and was having a big impact on games on a weekly basis. Then in March, against Clyde, at Central Park, he had to limp-off after only a few minutes when his right knee suffered a cruciate problem. Both he and Danny had to watch their team mates go through the play-off system again to win promotion and this time they were successful by beating Alloa and Brechin City to achieve their step-up. Cowden take on Raith Rovers in a Fife derby on Saturday in Division 2 looking to repeat their early season Alba Cup win against their Kirkcaldy neighbours when the 'beath won 1-0 at Starks Park.
