You Have To Believe

Confidence comes from within when somebody believes in you. Jamie Murphy has praised manager Stuart McCall for the belief he has instilled in Motherwell ahead of Saturday's Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone. The Lanarkshire side will be making their second appearance at Hampden this year after playing in the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final, against Rangers. Motherwell were not overawed by the occasion and  were the better side for long spells of their 2-1 defeat . League wins at Aberdeen and against Celtic were followed by a Scottish Cup win over holders Dundee United. They also secured their top-six place with an impressive run-in that saw them beat Aberdeen and United before an under-strength side drew at Tynecastle. Murphy said: "The manager has instilled a belief in the team that we can win the big games. We played well in the last semi-final without actually winning but we won the Scottish Cup tie against Dundee United here and we got a good result at Hearts to get the top six, so the manager has put a bit of belief in the team."  Motherwell had lost four out of five games before McCall took charge and their top-six hopes looked doubtful when Nick Blackman, Alan Gow, Mark Reynolds and Marc Fitzpatrick left in January. But Murphy revealed there was a determination within the squad not to let their season disintegrate. He went on: "The games that we lost made us stronger. We didn't want to get beat that many times in a row again. that was on everyone's mind when when we go out on the park that we don't want to get beat like that again. I think it has spurred people on and that's why we're doing well."  Motherwell are aiming for their first Scottish Cup final since 1991, when Stevie Kirk scored the winner in their 4-3 triumph over Dundee United. Murphy said: "It would be massive, you still see people like Stevie Kirk and Dougie Arnott about the club. You want to be the same as these guys, 20 years on and everyone still talks bout them. Now it's only a dream. If we win on Saturday, we will be a lot closer."
