Who Needs Enemies With Friends Like Severin

Ex-players inevitably return to haunt a club but when an ex-manager does it, that really hurts After winning on Saturday, Kilmarnock's Scott Severin believes his side can overtake Aberdeen before the end of the season after ending his former club's top-six hopes. The midfielder volley, which was turned into his own net by Davide Grassi, helped set Killie on the way to a 2-0 win at Rugby Park. They face Hearts on Saturday who will be keen to pick up all three points as they fight to stay in the top-six. The victory, which was sealed by Allan Russell's looping second-half header, leaves Killie just five points behind Aberdeen and Severin has them in his sights. The former Pittodrie captain said: "We have still got to play them up there, I think. We have six games to go and if we get a victory up there, you never know. We're trying to get as many teams as possible back in the mix. With Falkirk winning, us winning and St Mirren picking up a point, it could be interesting." Severin was not going to be drawn into comparisons when asked whether Aberdeen's failure to reach the top six. New Killie boss Jimmy Calderwood steered the Dons to a top-six finish in each of  five years at Pittodrie. Severin said: "You never know, they could bounce back next season, they have a decent squad. They have had an up-and-down season but everyone has been the same. With the squad of players they have they will probably get it right next season and I hope they do. There have been a few surprises, Motherwell have done really well since December. You wouldn't have expected St Johnstone to be where they are as well, so it has been an interesting season." Severin was recruited on loan from Watford by Calderwood and has his sights set on returning to Vicarage Road. He said: "I'm here until the end of the season and I'll go back down the road. I've still got another year. Hopefully I'll get a good pre-season under my belt and try and get back in the team." Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee felt his side lacked Kilmarnock's determination after their decent start was undone by the own goal, and he will now attempt to fire his players up for a season finale in the bottom six. McGhee said of Wednesday's visit to Rangers: "We go to Ibrox and that usually looks after itself, you usually play well. Hopefully the occasion will give us a bit more focus. The big one for me is the St Johnstone game next Sunday which becomes a massive game in closing out the season and finishing seventh."
