What A Difference A Week Makes

A week is a long time in the SPL. Two games and fortunes are all changed. Motherwell players are doing their best to forget the 6-0 thrashing from Rangers and have bounced back to secure their second win in five days. Manager Stuart McCall was full of praise after their 1-0 win over Hamilton. He had John Sutton to thank for the win as he dusted himself off from winning the spot kick to score the only goal of the game in the 36th-minute. Motherwell are now just two points off fourth-placed Kilmarnock in the SPL. Rather a different story to seven days ago when Motherwell were lying in eighth following getting beaten by Rangers and in danger of seeing their top-six hopes slip away. But they produced another performance deserving of the points, although the fluency of their Pittodrie display was more difficult to achieve against stuffy opponents and on a deteriorating Fir Park pitch. McCall, who will team welcome St Mirren to Fir Park on Wednesday, said: "It just shows how quickly things can turn round in football. The previous Saturday was probably the lowest I have been. But you can't afford to look back and I think the players deserve every credit for that. The Tuesday night game, the way they played, gave us every confidence. But we knew this would be a different type of game and it proved that way. But I think we merited the points. We defended very well and our keeper hasn't had a save to make." Sutton continued to enjoy his partnership with Jeffers with Murphy floating behind them, although the former Scotland Under-21 player was closely marked by Gavin Skelton throughout. Sutton said: "He (Jeffers) has been brilliant for us. He is very natural in terms of his movement and very easy to play with. Jamie Murphy has been doing very well just in behind the two of us. Although it was scrappy against Hamilton, we still managed to create a few chances and we are looking not too bad going forward. We went on a good run about this time last year, and hopefully we can push on up the league. It's a funny league. After the Rangers game we were probably looking below us a little bit and you string two wins together and we are looking above us again. We just have to keep it going. St Mirren are a very good team and they have pulled off some good results, especially away from home this year." Meanwhile, Sutton rejected claims from Hamilton manager Billy Reid that he had "conned" referee Crawford Allan into awarding a penalty when he and Martin Canning went for Keith Lasley's cross. Inevitably, Sutton said: "I thought it was a definite penalty. It was a good ball in from Keith. The defender has got too tight on me. I think I would have been in the other side of him and he has pulled me down. I don't think I have ever conned referees. At the time I was more disappointed I wasn't going to get my shot in."
