Walking Wounded

Players arriving injured for international duty is not unusual. Scotland's medical team will assess Phil Bardsley after he reported that he will be arriving at the team hotel with a hip knock. The national squad gathering is meant to be flying to Dublin today ahead of this week's Carling Nations Cup games against Wales and Republic of Ireland. However, the eruption of a volcano in Iceland curtailed their plans to leave on the 10:30 flight. Scotland assistant Peter Houston knows about the injury but is confident that Bardsley will be passed fit. Celtic midfielder Kris Commons pulled out on Sunday night with a hamstring injury and Peterborough's Craig Mackail-Smith had to withdraw after his club reached the npower League One play-off final against Huddersfield.  Houston said: "Kris came down to the hotel and our medical people had a look at him. His hamstrings are really tight and they can go at any time. We have had it before with other players so unfortunately Kris has had to withdraw on the advice of the medical team. Most of the guys appear to have come through unscathed. Phil has a knock on the hip but he says he will be okay. But we will look at the bigger picture when we have the medical people have a look at him. Mackail-Smith has the play-off final so he isn't in the squad."
