Thomson In Charge Of Old Firm Again
WIll the Old Firm game be remembered for football rather than the referee this time? Referee Craig Thomson will be in charge of his second consecutive Old Firm game this weekend when Rangers host Celtic in the SPL. Thomson caused controversy at the Co-operative Insurance Cup final last month when he pointed to the spot after Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic went down under a challenge from Thomas Rogne, only to apparently change his mind and book the Croatian for diving. Jelavic later scored the winner as Rangers secured a 2-1 win but manager Walter Smith highlighted the "very strange" and "very dangerous" decision after the match. Smith has also previously criticised one of Thomson's assistants for the Ibrox clash, Tom Murphy. Smith felt Murphy had made a "poor decision" in disallowing a Kris Boyd goal in a 0-0 draw at Motherwell in November 2008 and referred to a controversial goal Celtic striker Scott McDonald scoring against his club the previous season. Smith said at the time: "It was a poor decision by the linesman. I think the TV replays show quite clearly that Kris Boyd was onside. Mr Murphy was quick to allow a Scott McDonald goal at Celtic Park last season. And he was quick to disallow that one tonight."
