Thistle Show Them!

26 October 2010 18:39
Strange days indeed when serial under-achievers Cowdenbeath are looking down on the "cuddly toy" of Scottish Football as Chick Young once called them! After drawing 2-2 with the team at the bottom of the league (Morton) on Saturday last, Cowdenbeath go to the club that replaced the Greenock men at the foot of the First following points shared at Central Park. There have been few occasions in post war football history when the poorer cousins of the Kingdom have been above Partick Thistle when it comes to league position but Cowden continue to hold their own in mid-table in Division 1 as they travel to Glasgow for Saturday's encounter.Older Blue Brazilians have never forgiven Bertie Auld or forgotten the Jags goal SEVEN minutes into Injury Time in a famous Scottish Cup 3rd Round tie in 1978 which saw the then Premier League Partick escape with a 1-1 draw against a Cowden side in the bottom half of  Division 2. Former Celtic star Auld was Thistle boss at the time and chose to lambast Scotland goalie Alan Rough over Jim Marshall's first half opener rather than admit that Dennis McQuade's equaliser seemed to be conjured from  the referee's broken watch. To compound matters Cowden were denied a stonewall penalty in the replay after not so much a series as a saga of postponements and Thistle limped back West with a less than convincing 1-0 win. The Blue Brazil did gain a 1-0 cup revenge over Thistle in the  90's at Firhill (ironically with a penalty) but that crash of '78 makes the Jags current troubles all the sweeter for loyal 'Beath fans with a long memory.Cowden goalie David Hay was sent off for a professional foul after only 7 minutes against Morton but ten man 'beath took a point to see their first league draw of the season. In a month when it's been all about Wayne's World another Man U legend continues to keep Cowden afloat although Jimmy Nicholl is deflecting all praise to his players. He said: "The lads showed great character against Morton and not for the first time this season. They listen, they learn and they fight for every ball. They are an honest bunch and a real credit to Cowdenbeath FC."Next stop Firhill then for the Cowdenbeath Roadshow and the chance (before 3pm at least) to thumb a Blue Brazil nose at Glasgow's football treasure from the lofty position of 6th!! This is not a view Cowden fans are used to. Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba net)This is Scottish-Fitba.Net
