Things Are Gonna Get Better For St Mirren

The Buddies are making themselves difficult to beat Motherwell needed some late magic from Nick Blackman to earn a point in Paisley. The sort of performance from St Mirren convinced Craig Brown that St Mirren will keep improving as the season goes on. St Mirren looked set to frustrate Motherwell until Blackman turned and fired the ball into the roof of the net with 15 minutes left to earn a 1-1 draw. Brown was frustrated his side could not follow up away wins over Kilmarnock, Inverness and St Johnstone as they slipped out of the SPL top four. However, the Motherwell manager recognised the increasing threat from a St Mirren team who had beaten Aberdeen and Dundee United in recent weeks and were seconds away from holding Celtic to a goalless draw. Brown said: "We didn't play very well but that's credit to St Mirren. They are a battling side and are getting better and better as the weeks go on. They will cause a lot of sides problems. As they did against Celtic, they played two up front and one of their back three keeps breaking from the back, which is very commendable. They are a team who wants to play football and great credit to (St Mirren manager) Danny Lennon because he is encouraging them to play. But even under those circumstances I think we were better and were unlucky not to win the game. I think St Mirren had more of the ball and more opportunities against Celtic. I was disappointed with the first-half performance but in the second half we were well on top." St Mirren, tipped for relegation in the summer by a number of pundits, are now three points ahead of bottom club Hamilton but manager Lennon has higher ambitions. He said: "Hibs lost so we have gained a point on Hibs. That was our aim, to start looking up the way and catch the ones above us. I just felt after the initial 10 minutes of the second half we had enough chances to get a second goal and put the game more in our control. That's where we lost that bit of momentum."
