The National Stadium Is Not The Final Destination

Playing for your country at football you hope to get to the national stadium one day. That day will be 20 October for the Scotland women's squad.

Arsenal and Scotland striker Jennifer Beattie can't wait till Saturday to finally get to play at the national stadium. Scotland's women take on their counterparts from Spain on Saturday in the first leg of their play off to reach the EURO2013 championships to be played in Sweden. Beattie has been at Hampden before of course supporting the men's national side but this will be the first time the women's national side will take to the field. Women have played there before of course as part of the Olympics this year. Playing at the home of Scottish football is not the main prize of course, as Beattie and her team mates want to get to Sweden.

It will be interesting to see how much of a crowd finds their way to the national stadium for the game, where entry if free, when a full SPL and SFL card will be played on the same date. The largest crowd Scotland have attracted for a home game is around 1,600 and that sort of number will be lost in a stadium that can hold 52,063. Perhaps the SFA should have considered playing the game at a smaller venue where the fans are a lot closer to the pitch to allow them to act as the 12th man on Saturday. However, the result is the main thing and as the squad gathers tonight, their TV viewing has been arranged. The SFA have a tall pile of DVDs of Spain playing in the EURO2013 qualifiers and other games for the team to watch. Every little helps and if getting square eyes for a couple of days is the price to pay, I am sure the players will consider it a worthwhile exercise.
