Success Can Add Value

If Motherwell progress in the Europa League some new faces could be heading to Fir Park Motherwell manager Craig Brown is looking to being successful in the Europa League to allow him to move on his signing targets who he would like to bring to Fir Park. Brown has been struggling to sign any outfield players who are of first team standard since regulars Jim O'Brien, Giles Coke and Lukas Jutkiewicz left the club. Icelandic league leaders Breidablik await Motherwell on Thursday in the Europa league, when Motherwell will be looking to build on their 1-0 lead. If the Steelmen make it through they will take on Norwegian side Aalesunds in the next round. The home leg of another European tie could bring in enough money to fund the purchase of another player and put Motherwell on the verge of a glamour clash in the play-off round, when they would lose their seeded status and face the prospect of meeting with the likes of Liverpool and Juventus. Brown, who checked out a number of trialists during a practice match against Mixu Paatelainen's Kilmarnock at the weekend, said: "We've got one or two ideas of players we saw against Kilmarnock on Saturday. Mixu had a few trialists and we had a few trialists and I think both of us were quite pleased with what we saw. The research to improve our team is relentless - that's the message to our fans. If or when we get any funds, we know where to go to get some players. We have one or two on hold but they can't wait forever obviously. We'll do our very best for the fans of Motherwell to get suitable reinforcements. Our top squad is good and we have excellent youth players but we haven't got enough cover. We have only two experienced strikers. Gary Smith and Bob McHugh are coming through but we only have John Sutton and Jamie Murphy who are experienced strikers. If we can survive this round, that's added income which gives us resources to pay new players. We can consider paying a wage but that's restricted at the moment to a striker. We've got a budget for that and nothing else. To add to our squad we have to succeed in Europe and that's a terrific motivation for us." Well dominated much of the first leg without making the most of several dangerous crosses but Brown feels his players will be better prepared for their second encounter against a team who have played 12 league games. The 70-year-old said: "The match we had will help us. The added sharpness will stand us in good stead up there. The lads were saying that themselves, they now feel ready for taking on a good challenge." Editor Ger Harley (ger@scottishfitba net)Admin Team (admin@scottishfitba net)This is Scottish-Fitba Net
