Snow Joke In The Highlands

You don't often have to include an overnight stay when playing up north. The joys of travelling in winter conditions were experienced by Queen’s Park after their game against Elgin City on Tuesday night. The travelling party had to sleep on the bus after the police stopped their coach from travelling past Dalwhinnie in Invernessshire due to adverse weather conditions. It was a good job that the Spiders had won or else tempers could well have frayed among head coach Gardner Speirs, his backroom staff, players and Committee Members as they tried to sleep on the team coach. Speirs said, “We left Elgin at 10.00pm but we were stopped at midnight and told the A9 was closed and we could go no further. We stayed there for the next 8 hours until we could move again and everyone just tried their best to have a sleep on the bus. Thankfully spirits were good as we had won and we took the players into a hotel for breakfast at Newtonmore as soon as we got going again.” The coach party eventually managed to get heading southwards at 10.00 am with Speirs adding, “Obviously the players will have had a further day away from their work and we would like to thank their employers for their support. We could not do very much about the situation that we found ourselves in and we are obviously hoping everyone is back in tip-top condition for Saturday’s vital game with Montrose.” It was not just the Glasgow side who suffered the backlash of the weather as match referee John Beaton was also stuck for eight hours in his car and four of Elgin City’s players who as based in the West of Scotland had a nightmare journey where they travelled one hundred miles getting nowhere in a nine hour period and they have still not made it home by Thursday morning. The players led by David Niven, all left Borough Briggs at 10.00pm after the game and made it to Aviemore before being told they could go no further. They decided to head back to Elgin only to become stuck and they arrived back at Borough Briggs at 7.00 in the morning. The club managed to get them hotel rooms for a few hours rest before they set off for home again. However, they only managed to reach Dalwhinnie this time before they were sent back to Elgin a second time where they were booked in for a further night’s accommodation.
