Seven Glasgow City Players Approached To Play In GB Squad

With the SFA not wanting to get involved in the London Olympics, will they resist putting any pressure on players approached to play

After Glasgow City won Scotland's Womens Premier League with 100% record and made the last 16 of the Champions League, it should not be much of a surprise to hear that an incredible seven of their players have been approached by GB women's team coach, Hope Powell, and asked if they would like to be considered for selection for the Great Britain Olympic football team for London 2012.

City's Emma Fernon, Jane Ross, Jo Love, Christie Murray, Lisa Evans, Leanne Ross and Rachel Corsie have all received letters asking if they would like to be considered ‘available’ for selection. After responses have been submitted, Powell will compile a ‘short-list’ of players by March 2012, and then announce her final squad at the beginning of July. There is much debate about a ‘women’s GB football team’ and the SFA are opposed to any Scottish players being involved. However, Glasgow City plan to leave the decision entirely up to the players who have been approached. If selected, the players will be with the GB squad from 8 July and potentially right through to 9 August.
