The final two efforts 9. Mo Johnston v Sweden 1990- Goal Scotland qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, a remarkable fifth consecutive finals, and confidence was high after the tournament build up in which the team beat holders Argentina 1-0 in a friendly. However, the opening match saw Scotland slump to one of the most embarrassing defeats in their history, a 1-0 loss to competition debutants Costa Rica.  The team rallied to beat Sweden 2-1 in their next match meaning that a point in their final group game against Brazil may be enough. Despite managing to hold Brazil at 0-0 for most of the game, they scored a late winner. Other results in the group were unfavourable and Scotland failed to progress. In the Sweden game Stuart McCall put us 1-0 up then Roy Aitken was sent sprawling in the box. Mo Johnston made it 2-0 from the spot and despite a late Swedish rally we held on for a 2-1 win. 10. John Collins v Brazil 1998- Goal The opening match of World Cup France 98 and Scotland's sixth finals out of seven. Brazil took the lead after only four minutes but then we were handed a penalty which John Collins scored with a great degree of coolness. A Tom Boyd O.G. late on denied us maybe our greatest finals result since we drew with Brazil 0-0 in West Germany in World Cup 1974.
