Scotland Take On England Twice In Two Days

26 June 2013 19:38
Just a day before the senior squad take to the new Wembley, the under 21s will take to the Bramell Lane pitch

Billy Stark's Scotland Under-21 side will take on England at Bramall Lane on Tuesday, 13th August in as part of The FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The game will take place at the home of Sheffield United, now managed by ex-Scotland internationalist, David Weir, with a 7.30pm kick-off. The sides will meet the night before Gordon Strachan’s senior squad face the ‘Auld Enemy’ at Wembley Stadium, as under-21 coach Stark prepares his squad for their away UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier against the Netherlands in September. It will be the first time the two under-21 sides have gone head-to-head since 1993. The teams have met eight times at under-21 level with Scotland seeking their first win over their neighbours, losing six and drawing twice. The first game between the two teams took place in 1977 and was also played at Bramall Lane, as England ran out winners with a solitary goal from Laurie Cunningham. Stark was a member of the squad that travelled to the Lane back in 1977 and says he is looking forward to a return to Sheffield.Stark said: "When I was growing up we played England every year at international level and it was the big of the season and one you always looked forward to. Things are different now but this match is one I’m sure the players will be looking forward to as they will watch a lot of English football on television and this is an opportunity to take them on in their own back yard. It’s an exciting fixture and England will prepare us for our important qualifier against the Netherlands as they have some excellent young players in their ranks. Bramall Lane is one of the oldest professional football grounds in the world and this match is part of the FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations so there is a nice bit of history there. Hopefully we’ll see lots of Scotland supporters in Sheffield to support us before they head down to London for the senior match the following night."Tickets: £10 Adults, £5 Concessions, £20 Family of four* (*T &Cs apply).
