Craig Levein is the new manager of Scotland after agreeing a two-year contract with the Scottish Football Association.

Dundee United confirmed the news that, subject to written confirmation of compensation being received from the SFA, Levein would be leaving Tannadice with immediate effect to succeed George Burley as Scotland boss.

The Terrors have named Peter Houston as caretaker manager while Gary Kirk will be his assistant.

Levein was named Dundee United manager in October 2006 and has helped to transform the club's fortunes.

Chairman Stephen Thompson said: "It's with great regret and disappointment that I confirm Craig Levein is leaving Dundee United.

"He's done a great job for us and leaves the team - and the club as a whole - in a much better position than it was when he arrived here.

"While we always knew he'd move on to a bigger job and are flattered that the job he's done here has brought him to the attention of the national team, we're neverthless very disappointed Craig is leaving us at this time. However, he leaves with our gratitude and best wishes for the future. We now move on and look to our own future.

"We've already had plenty of names put to us as potential replacements and I can understand why because we've got a good squad of players and are in a strong position to attract good candidates.

"However, we won't be rushing into appointing someone else, we'll take our time and look at all the options."
