Saunders Out For The Season

11 August 2011 12:46
Not such a good night for Steven Saunders Motherwell manager Stuart McCall watched in horror from the New St Mirren stand as defender Steven Saunders collapsed in agony after just four minutes of the Under 21 game against Norway. As Saunders moved in the general direction of a cross ball with nobody close by, he fell to the ground clutching his ankle. Saunders is philosophical about the injury and has vowed to come back stronger from the Achilles injury that has finished his season.  Saunders will undergo surgery to repair his ruptured tendon today and will be out for nine months. The versatile defender, who won a full Scotland cap against the Faroe Islands last year, is no stranger to coming back back from serious injury.  He returned from a broken leg before moving from Queen's Park to Motherwell's youth set-up, and he is determined to overcome this latest setback. Saunders said: "Obviously I am gutted about what has happened but I just need to get on with it now. I am upbeat about things - I won't let this beat me. I'll come back bigger and stronger next season and my recovery starts as soon as I have my operation."
