Relying On The Hedge Fund

Cowdenbeath's financial future is partly reliant on a win at Glebe Park on Sunday in the 2nd Leg of the First Division Play-Off Final. Wednesday night's 1st Leg was a nervy, scoreless affair and not a great advert for non-SPL football in Scotland as BBC ALBA beamed Central Park's first live TV match in over 40 years to the UK via SKY Channels. Brechin City seemed tired, and no wonder after their exertions against semi final favourites Airdrie Utd, while Cowden were shot-shy, maybe mindful of two matches this season (one of them against City) where they have raced to a 3-0 lead only to be hauled back to a final score of 3-3.There was as much talk amongst Blue Brazilians about the future of their club as the play-off final midweek but rumours are rife around Cowdenbeath that club owners, the Brewsters, are committed to at least one more season at Central Park. Groundsharing with a Fife League neighbour seemed like a strong option if Cowden were to be promoted via the play-offs but now assurances are being given from within the club that Cowden's rickety old stadium will be brought up to scratch to host First Division fixtures should the Blue Brazil triumph in Angus on Sunday. Rumours of an amalgamation with Edinburgh Spartans seem now to have been only that.Cowden are searching for second tier football for the first time since four national divisions became the norm in Scotland. They clinched promotion from Division 3 in the early part of this century with a 2-1 final day win over Brechin and once beat the Angus club 10-0 in a League match before WW II. Even at the start of the 1970's Brechin were Central Park cannon fodder with 6-0 and 5-2 defeats coming their way at the Fife Maracana in the early part of that decade. How times have changed!Jim Duffy's stock will surely be high if he leads Brechin to promotion from a 4th place finish. His side never gave the impression on Wednesday night they had finished five points behind the ' Beath in Division 2.Possible Kingdom derbies against Raith Rovers and Dunfermline Athletic and matches against old First Division rivals from the 1970's Dundee and Falkirk have mouths watering in Central Fife. Manager Danny Lennon's place in the Central Park cupboard of fame is assured should he lead his team to victory in sight of the famous Brechin hedge!Once again the match will be live on BBC ALBA from 3pm on Sunday.
