Red Devil Tartan XI

06 August 2011 10:03
The Tartan influence on the Old Trafford club is legendary from Sir Matt to ' The Doc ' to Sir Alex. We wonder how this Scots XI in their prime would fair against Mancini and Co on Sunday at in the Community Shield Manchester derby. Red Devils (in skirts) 1. Jim LeightonYes, we know Jim didn't enjoy the best days of his career under Sir Alex at Old Trafford and the 3-3 draw against Palace in the 1990 FA Cup final was the end of the road for the Scottish International in England, Jim was replaced by Les Sealey for the replay which Man U won, but his overall career speaks for itself and Jim is still United's most famous Scots between the sticks! 2. Arthur Albiston Albiston played at United with distinction from 1974 until 1988 and was the last remaining player from the Tommy Docherty era which saw United win the old English Second Division in 1975 after just one season out of the top flight and the 1977 FA Cup final when they beat Liverpool 2-1. 3. Jimmy Nicholl This 'honorary Scot' in the team has done a lot for our game. Nicholl started his career as a junior player at United. His senior career started in 1974. He helped the club win the 1977 FA Cup final and collected a runners-up medal in the 1979 final. In 1981, he left the club after scoring five goals, joining Sunderland on a permanent contract after a loan spell, and playing 32 games in one season before moving to Toronto Blizzard in Canada, scoring 11 goals in 77 games over the next two years before signing for Rangers. He was also a regular at international level for Northern Ireland during his career in the 70's and early 80's. Managed Raith Rovers to League Cup glory and Europe in the 1990's and also managed Fife rivals Cowdenbeath in the unusual placing for them of Division 1. Now assistant at Killie. 4. Martin BuchanOne of the youngest captain's ever to lift the SFA Cup with Aberdeen in 1970 when they beat Celtic 3-1. Buchan was later part of the on field Tartan revolution at Old Trafford in the Tommy Doc years and he also captained The Red Devils with distinction leading them to the old English Div 2 title in 1975. 5. Jim Holton "Six feet two, eyes of blue, big Jim Holton is after you!'' Another Doc discovery for Man U who quickly made it to the Scottish international team. Instrumental in getting Scotland to the 1974 World Cup finals with a towering performance in the win or bust game against an impressive Czech side who scored first but lost 2-1 at Hampden to send Scotland through to their first World Cup finals since 1958. 6. Stewart HoustonPlayed twice for Chelsea and 77 times for Brentford but came to prominence under the Doc at Old Trafford. The Dunoon-born player signed for United in 1973 and played seven years at Old Trafford. Was assistant manager to another ex- United Scot, George Graham, when Arsenal won the league in the late 1980's. 7. Darren FletcherSadly, one of the few Scots one can name at the very top level of the English game in the modern era. Born in Dalkeith in 1984. Fletcher really became a United regular after a fine display in the 2004 FA Cup final win over Millwall. Made the breakthrough to the first team in 2003/4 and hasn't looked back. 8. Gordon Strachan33 goals in 160 appearances under Fergie at Old Trafford from 1984-1989. Scored Scotland's most memorable goal of their 1986 World Cup finals appearance in Mexico against W. Germany and also won the Cup Winners Cup in 1983 with Aberdeen. Strachan also won the old English First Division with Leeds. Strachan also has an OBE. 9. Denis LawNeeds no introduction. United goalscoring legend who was sadly 'freed ' by Tommy Docherty in 1973 before ending up at Man City for a second spell at Maine Road. Younger fans should access some of the Lawman's goals on YouTube especially one mazy run and strike against Crystal Palace. 10. Lou MacariAnother Tommy Docherty signing. Macari joined United from Celtic two years after winning the SFA Cup and three years after breaking into the Celtic side who were continuing their 9 in a row league achievement (1965-74) into the 1970's. Scored nearly 90 goals in 329 appearances for United. Born in Largs. 11. Ted MacDougallNot the best known United Scot but hit a real purple patch as a goalscorer for Bournemouth in the old English 3rd Division in the early 1970's, including 9 in one game in an FA Cup tie against non-league Margate. The Inverness born striker who had the real name 'John' MacDougall netted 5 in 18 appearances for United in 1972/3. Signed by Frank O' Farrell and later moved on by The Doc. Subs George GrahamSigned by Tommy Docherty from Arsenal and became probably the Doc's best Scots signing during his time at the club. Played for Arsenal in the 2-1 win over Liverpool in the 1971 FA Cup final. Graham later became one of the manager's of the 80's and 90's at Arsenal and Spurs. Jim McCalliogBorn 23 September 1946 in Glasgow. Played for Wolves, Sheff Wed, Man Utd and Southampton. He played for Southampton in their victorious 1976 FA Cup final against his former employers Manchester United and made the pass that set up Bobby Stokes for the only goal. He also appeared in the 1966 FA Cup final for Wednesday in a 3–2 defeat by Everton, and scored one of the Owls' goals. He also won 5 caps for Scotland and famously scored the third goal in Scotland's 3–2 win over World Cup winners England in 1967. Willie MorganDuring the summer of 1968 he was transferred to United from Burnley where he took over from John Connelly . He scored 34 goals for United and led them to promotion in 1975 after one season in the 2nd division. He played for Scotland in the World Cup Finals of 1974, which took place in West Germany.
