Rangers Willing To Bide Their Time

After all the upheaval of recent months Rangers are content to work their way through the leagues based on the results on the field.

With the future structure of Scottish football still in doubt, many clubs have no idea which league they will be playing in next year. However, Rangers do not expect to be any closer to the top flight than they currently are. There has been increased speculation about a new league set-up for next season, with First Division teams keen to set up 'SPL2' after breaking away from the current SFL. The second level would be made up of ten clubs but this number would not include Rangers despite speculation that the Ibrox club could be invited to be one of the ten clubs invited to make up the inaugural 'SPL2'. Interim Rangers chief executive Craig Mather insists there has been no contact from the leaders of the 'SPL2' group and is not interested in fast-tracking the team through the divisions. He said: "Ally (McCoist) and I have always been on the same page and the club's stance is simple. We're now in June and we have had no contact whatsoever from the SPL regarding anything. We want to work our way up the leagues creating building blocks so that when we get back to the top of Scottish football, we have the right team and ethos. As far as we are concerned, we will be playing in SFL2 or whatever that league will be called next season."
