Opportunity Knocks

There is a chance for others when players get injured. Who will take it? Gareth Wardlaw faces up to six weeks on the St Mirren sidelines with suspected ankle ligament damage. Wardlaw has scored two goals since his summer move from Cowdenbeath but was lined up to replace Michael Higdon in Saturday's game against Aberdeen. However, Higdon and defender Marc McAusland are both struggling to make the trip to Pittodrie after being taken off injured in the goalless Scottish Cup tie against Peterhead. Saints manager Danny Lennon said: "Gareth Wardlaw has gone over on his ankle. It looks like we're going to lose Gareth for four to six weeks. He is getting an X-ray just to make sure but it's quite a bad one. He was just getting over a wee niggle in his groin and was suspended there too. If Michael hadn't made it for Saturday it was an opening for Gareth up there. But it is certainly someone else's opportunity now." Lennon is still looking to add to his squad following his signing of midfielder Jim Goodwin last week. However, money is tight which means he is unable to add any more players at the moment. A move for managerless Burnley's Paisley-born striker Steven Thompson has been put on hold. Lennon said: "That one looks like it's not going to happen in this window for us. Whoever takes over at Burnley may well be a big Steven Thompson fan. Any manager doing their job properly will always have players on their radar but at this present minute we are not in a position to do any business. Until we can create some money we can't do anything but there are certainly players out there who interest me." Lennon had been hoping to free up a wage by releasing Hugh Murray to Dunfermline, but the long-serving midfielder remains at St Mirren Park despite being given permission to talk to the Fifers. Lennon said: "We've had no other discussion on that, it's still in the hands of Hugh Murray and his agent. There are still negotiations going on but nothing concrete."
