One Final Step

Motherwell's young side, guided by the veteran Craig Brown, are just one game away from the Europa League proper. Motherwell will take on Odense at Fir Park tonight without the suspended Steve Jennings. The midfielder was sent off for a second bookable offence late in Motherwell's 2-1 defeat in Denmark last week in the first leg of their Europa League play-off. Esteban Casagolda is ineligible but striker John Sutton has recovered from a virus. Motherwell stand just 90 minutes from the group stages as they bid to overturn a 2-1 deficit against the Danes. Manager Craig Brown is well aware of the differences in terms of experience between his young squad and tonight's Danish opposition and does not want to over burden his player with the weight of importance of tonight's game. But the veteran boss believes his charges have already shown their ability to handle the big occasion when taking on the Old Firm.   Brown said: "The players we have at Motherwell are young players, they have a vastly experienced team. I would say half of their squad are over 30, three of the back four are 33, the goalkeeper is over 30 and they have guys like Hansen coming in who is 31, Djemba-Djemba is 29. We have a team of young players and what I've been saying to them is that we just have to go out and play - forget the stakes, that's not our concern. Our concern is that we play to the best of our ability. It's a very good platform for a young player to show his ability because the eyes of European football are upon you. Let's go and do ourselves credit and they deserve to because they work extremely hard and are very responsive.''
