Sometimes it takes an outsider to see a solution to a problem that the protagonists are too close to for clarity
The impasse that has denied Scotland of the services of Steven Fletcher for the national side could be broken by his club manager, Martin ,who has hinted he may be willing to act as go between. Fletcher has not played for Craig Levein's side since he texted the manager that he did not want to be involved in a friendly with Northern Ireland more than a year ago. In response to a direct question on Twitter, Fletcher posted that he was willing to end his international exile if he was asked to return by Levein. The national manager has held the door open for an approach by he player for 15 months and is not about to have a change of heart right now. However, somebody may need to bash heads together and O'Neill may be the man to do it. The Sunderland manager said: "I touched on it briefly when he was signing here, in a casual conversation with Steven I have not pursued it any further - it might need an olive branch along the way. Am I going to provide that at the minute? It's not really my job. I need to know the ins and outs to do that. If you have a quality player and he is not playing for his country, then it might need looking at. Would I like to see him playing for Scotland? Of course."
