Not As Black As He Is Painted

Paulo Sergion has come to the defence of midfielder Ian Black

Hearts manager Paulo Sergio has a lot of time for midfielder Ian Black despite his apparently poor disciplinary record. Black is about to be available for selection again following a return from a three-game suspension after his second red-card of the season. Sergio has spoken to Black about his disciplinary issues, but denied that the player, who was seen red against Motherwell and Kilmarnock this term, is overly aggressive. The Tynecastle manager said: "He's a very good player. He has made some mistakes and we've been talking with him to be careful with those kind of situations which can be bad for his career. Sometimes he's making an image of an aggressive guy. If you see his record during all these years he's played in the SPL it's not so bad. But it seems like he's an assassin on the pitch. It's not true. You can see his record in the last eight years. It's not a bad record. We are working with him on that because we believe with Blacky we have another good solution." Hearts secured a 2-1 win over Black's former club Inverness, responding from a scoreless run of four game with a much-needed victory. Sergio added: "I think we can do better. I'm happy about the result, but I think we can play better football. Everybody knows we're living hard times in the club, with their great character and great attitude last weekend we did enough to deserve to win." The weekend sees Hearts pitted against St Johnstone with the manager hoping his side can make amends for their worst performance of the season against the Perth men earlier this year. Sergio went on: "It will be a difficult match. It's a team who are having a good season, but we know if we beat them we'll recover fourth place and start looking for third. It's more than three points to play for this weekend."
