No Taking The Foot Off The Gas
Glasgow City continued their fine form with a 9-0 demolition of Spartans at Ainslie Park today.
Hot off the back of an impressive win in the Champions League midweek, City showed all of their title winning credentials to defeat a Spartans side, sitting third in the League table. The Champions opened the scoring on seven minutes as Christie Murray fired home from close range after a City corner. Rachel Harrison had pulled off a fine stop for the home side as she turned a Denise O’Sullivan shot around the post, but could do nothing to stop Murray scoring from the resultant set piece. City were two up at the half hour mark scoring in fine style. Christie Murray sent a brilliant pass forward to release Sarah Crilly and the City forward crossed expertly to meet the run of Ruesha Littlejohn who’s diving header bulleted past Harrison. Moments later and Littlejohn’s international team mate Denise O’Sullivan made it 3-0, volleying in off the post from inside the box after a Sarah Crilly cross. Five minutes before the break Jo Love put the game beyond the home side heading a Crilly cross past Harrison.City were back on the scoresheet again soon after the restart as Christie Murray headed home her second of the match converting a Leanne Crichton corner. Jo Love then scored a sixth for City with a fine finish from the edge of the box. Love showed great control to take an Eilish McSorley pass out of the air, beat a defender and then cleverly lobbed Harrison from the edge of the 18 yard line to score her 2nd of the game. Murray earned her hat-trick on the 78th minute converting from the penalty spot after a Spartans hand ball inside the area and in turn put her side seven goals ahead. Second half substitute Suzanne Mulvey got on the scoresheet with just less than 10 minutes remaining as she fired across Harrison and into the bottom corner to make it 8-0 to the seven in a row title winners. To put the icing on the cake of a fine City performance, Lisa Robertson hit the back of the net to score number nine for City as she powered into the box past two Spartans defenders before shooting past Harrison.Commenting on the match, Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said: "I asked the girls for a big performance in the penultimate game of the League season and it is fair to say that they delivered. It was especially pleasing seeing the goals shared out again and I have to say that some of our play was very easy on the eye. We managed to utilise the squad and I felt this week that the level of performance was not diminished in any way. We now head for the international break, but look forward to welcoming Aberdeen at home to Petershill on the 3rd of November."Glasgow City have seven players selected for the Scotland squad to face Northern Ireland next Saturday at Fir Park– Suzanne Lappin, Rachel Corsie, Eilish McSorley, Jo Love, Leanne Crichton, Suzanne Mulvey and Leanne Ross. Jess Fishlock will join up with the Welsh squad to captain her side against England on the same day and Julie Nelson will face her club team mates as she represents Northern Ireland in the game against the Scots. Denise O’Sullivan and Ruesha Littlejohn are both in the Republic of Ireland squad to face Slovenia on the 30th October.
