No Rest For The Wicked

The work has only just begun for Gus MacPherson as he prepares for 2010-11 St Mirren boss Gus MacPherson was one of many SPL managers who was glad to see the back of season 2009-10. While happy to have retained SPL status, MacPherson agreed it had been an exhausting season. That did not prevent him from immediately starting getting ready for the next one. The Buddies lost their last game, 1-0 to Aberdeen, thanks to an own goal from former Dons defender Lee Mair to give the visitors the three points. MacPherson is prepared for difficult times ahead when he gets to hear what budget he will have to live within. He said: "It was disappointing to lose the game but some of the players looked as if they were on their last legs because of the physical and mental exertions over the last four or five weeks. It has been an emotional rollercoaster but the objective has been achieved. Now, we start preparations for next season. I will sit down with the chairman next week and see what resources we will have. The chairman has said that there will be cuts but we will need to see how many. We have nine or 10 players out of contract as well as the youth players. So lots of St Mirren players need to know about their future." MacPherson moved to dampen down expectations of the Buddies' fans for next season. He said: "It's been a good but a frustrating year although we did reach the Co-operative Insurance Cup final. People might say that to make progress we have to finish higher up the league and win a national cup competition. That sounds easy but people underestimate what it takes to do that. It's difficult to predict what will happen next season, as always. There is a fine line between success and failure in the SPL. We will have to make use of the resources that we have and it becomes harder but that is the challenge."
