No Excuses From McIntyre
The better team won on the night Dunfermline manager Jim McIntyre is glad "a horrible night" was over for his team as they crashed out of the Scottish Communities League Cup. The newly promoted side were beaten 2-1 in the second round by Second Division East Fife thanks to goals from Bobby Linn and Scott Dalziel. The below Par performance was only brightened a little with a goal from Liam Buchanan. The performance belied Dunfermline's unbeaten run in the SPL as they were outplayed by their Fife rivals. McIntyre was typically candid in his analysis. He said: "The best team won and there's no getting away from that. We weren't at the races; didn't start well and continued like that through the night. It's a bad day at the office and we're gutted we're out the cup, but we got exactly what we deserved. It's a horrible night. We've taken some great praise in recent weeks so let's take this one on the chin." McIntyre decided to rest Martin Hardie and the SPL's joint-top scorer Andy Kirk, but still believes the side he put out should have been good enough to get through the tie. He said: "We've been beaten by a lower-division team who had a few injuries themselves. I've only made three changes and I thought the team I selected could win the game." East Fife manager John Robertson described the result as one of the best of his management career, which has taken in spells with clubs including Inverness, Hearts and Ross County. It was he who guided Inverness Caledonian Thistle to their 2003 Scottish Cup win over Celtic in the Highlands. He said: "For me it's up there with the Celtic result. It's just unbelievable. I thought we dominated the game. We were sharp, inventive and if it wasn't for Paul Gallacher keeping the score down then we could have won by more."
