No Brazilians; Will A Spaniard Do?

11 July 2012 02:10
Ruben Garcia Rey could well be Cowdenbeath's Spaniard in the works this season. The rain in Spain may fall mainly on Cowdenbeath (once jokingly described as ''the wettest place in Scotland'' by ex-Manager and former Celtic star Joe Craig) but that hasn't stopped a youngster from the home of the World and European Champions taking an interest in playing in the Scottish First Division for last season's Second Division Champions.   Midfielder Ruben Garcia Rey returned to Spain last night to mull over a possible move to Fife after Cowden boss Colin Cameron said he would ''consider'' terms for the Spaniard in the run up to the new season. Cameron is also keeping a close eye on Keiran McDonald and the former Motherwell youngster played in a closed door game against Berwick last night (Tuesday 10th July)   Garcia Rey played the second half of Cowdenbeath's 3-3 draw at Borough Briggs versus Elgin City on Friday night and helped them recover after the Fifers went 3-0 down after 35 minutes. He then played the second 45 minutes of the Blue Brazil's 4-2 defeat of Brora at Dudgeon Park 24 hours later on their short Highland tour.   This Saturday sees more heavyweight Northern opposition for Cowden as Aberdeen visit Central Park for another pre-season friendly.   There will still be those at Cowdenbeath keen to remind Craig Brown that as a young manager he once led a Clyde team containing Steve Archibald, Pat Nevin and Dom Sullivan (October 1976) to a 4-3 defeat at Central Park with a Cowden team managed by ex-Celtic goalie Frank Connor coming back from a 0-3 half time deficit to win 4-3 in a Second Division match. Ex- Partick Thistle hero Alex Rae, Ian Campbell (win brother of future Jags manager Dick Campbell), Ian Harley and Davy Ross were all on the scoresheet in one of Cowden's most memorable games in the decade of long hair, Punk Rock and Scotland at two successive World Cups.
