Glasgow City's group stage announced for 'Meet the Champions' tournament

Glasgow City have been invited to participate in a ‘Meet the Champions’ tournament, hosted by Turbine Potsdam on 2-3 February. City have been drawn in Group A and will face Brøndby IF of Denmark, Djurgårdens IF of Sweden and VV St. Truiden of Belgium. In the other group, hosts Turbine Potsdam will face AC Sparta Praha, AZS Wroclaw and NöSV Neulengbach. The tournament is to be played over two days in front of a capacity crowd of 2,000 in the new MBS Indoor Arena in Potsdam. The tournament involves teams of eight-a-side and is the first of its kind hosted by Potsdam. It is an invitational event for some of the top nations in Champions League women’s football. City will play each group opponent twice, before two further placement games, which will decide the ultimate outcome of the tournament. The group game will be 12 minutes in duration with the placement games increasing to 15 minutes. Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said: "The format is very interesting and should ensure a rigorous pre-season workout for the players. The games are certain to be of a high intensity and will require the players to be in good condition. We open the tournament against Brøndby the Danish champions who swept aside all before them last season and are currently five points clear at the top having won all 14 games so far this campaign. As for the Swedes they appear to be going through a transitional stage, although they will no doubt provide very strong opposition. The Belgians St Truiden are another club who are looking to build for the future, they currently occupy a top five spot behind the likes of Standard Liege and Anderlecht. However we know that the standard of teams at this level are very difficult to break down and will require us to be at our best if we are to make an impact. Like every other tournament we enter we want to do as well as we can, whilst getting ready for the onset of a new season."
