Derek McInnes is a wanted man

The 2-0 win over Inverness could be the farewell game for St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes. He will be heading south to talk to Bristol City in the next few days after being given permission by chairman Geoff Brown to speak to the Championship side, who sacked Keith Millen after a poor start to the season. McInnes seems to be in pole position to take over at Ashton Gate, although City have also been linked with moves for Dave Jones and Mark Robins. City play Crystal Palace on Tuesday and will be keen to have someone in post for that game. However, McInnes will not be rushed and was not keen to talk about a possible departure and quickly moved down the tunnel after acknowledging the acclaim of the McDiarmid Park fans after the game. McInnes said: "I have been reluctant to speak about it, it has been bandied about for a while. But once the chairman gave me permission to speak to Bristol in the early part of next week, that's the situation. He has allowed me to speak to them and has obviously agreed something with them. It's a case of going down and waiting to see what develops. The first decision was the chairman's to allow me to go and the next decision, if anything is to be done, will be Bristol's. I'm reluctant to even speak about leaving, all it is is an opportunity to speak to them. The fact I'm going down to speak, obviously there is an attraction there. But I'm reluctant to say any more on it. The decision isn't mine at the minute. Whether I have got a decision to make, at the minute it's Bristol's decision." McInnes, whose team moved one point behind Celtic in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League thanks to goals from Francisco Sandaza and Dave Mackay, was delighted with his players' display given the circumstances. he said: "It was important the players had that focus to get the job done. Without being at our best, I thought we controlled the game and restricted Inverness. When you have enough experience, enough good players, and still have that wee bit of sparkle at the top end of the pitch, sometimes you don't have to be at your best." McInnes' opposite number, Terry Butcher was disappointed the same side that beat the other SPL Saints in their previous game struggled to create chances at McDiarmid Park. Butcher said: "I have no complaints about the result, massive complaints about the performance. We never really got going. I said at half-time that it wasn't like us, to go out and show how we can play. We had a lot of possession but we didn't create anything. We could still be playing there on Monday and Tuesday and still couldn't score. But full credit to St Johnstone, they defended really well."
