McCall Looking For Balance

It is not just the books that have to balance, the side has to have a balance as well. Stuart McCall has his first chance to get his squad looking a bit like his own with the transfer window open. He has some spare wages available with the departures of Alan Gow and Nick Blackman and has targeted a wide-left player as his first Motherwell signing. McCall enjoyed an emphatic first win in charge when his side beat in-form Dundee 4-0  on Sunday at Dens Park to get into the draw for the fifth round of the Scottish Cup. John Sutton scored twice and the man who set both up, Jamie Murphy, added a late solo effort to vindicate McCall's decision to restore the pair to more attacking positions. McCall said: "That was the reason me letting Alan Gow go, because I need a proper left-sided player. I know Sutty plays out there and I know Murph plays out there but for me their best positions are down the middle. You think you are close to getting someone in and then somebody comes in with a couple of extra quid and it fritters away. I have been down so many dead ends but I had the same at Bradford so it's not something that will get me down, I'll just knock on. The thing is, unlike when I was in England when you could get a person in for a month and see what they were like, when you bring them up here from England you have to get them in for five months. So you've got to make sure they are not just going to be a squad-filler but better than what you've got." Motherwell do have two left-sided midfield players in their first-team squad in the shape of Marc Fitzpatrick and Ross Forbes, but both are suited to more central positions. It looks like Fitzpatrick will extended his contract despite McCall's recruitment drive. Fitzpatrick, who started at Dens Park, signed a six-month deal in the summer after injury limited his chances the previous season. McCall said: "It's balancing the budget of what Marc's on and what he wants, which I don't think will be a problem. You've got to wheel and deal but I'll be sitting down with Marc and his people and I think we'll be looking forward to keeping him until the end of the season."
