With Man City and Man Utd set to clash on Sunday in the showpiece opener to the English season, The Community (formerly The Charity) Shield. We look back to the days when Scottish players were the norm at both clubs. First up Scots in Light Blue. Manchester McCity 1. Keith MacCraeSigned from Motherwell in 1973 for the then 'super-fee' of £100,000 as cover for Joe Corrigan. The Ginger headed McRae made his debut in a 2-1 win at Sheffield United and although it was always going to be hard to unseat arguably the third best goalie in England at the time behind Clemence and Shilton the young Scot stuck to his task over nearly 8 years making 56 appearances for City. 2. Willie DonachieAlthough a stalwart for City over a number of seasons and a League Cup winner with the then-Maine Road side in 1976 Willie maybe gave us a taste of what was to come in Argentina during the Home International Championships of 1978 pre- World Cup.  Scotland v Wales at Hampden. With about a minute to go Scotland lead 1-0. Wales have just missed a penalty and concluded it isn't to be their day - until Willie gets in on the act.  Scotland keeper Jim Blyth throws the ball out to Donachie, who's standing at the edge of the penalty area. Donachie knocks the ball back to Blyth without looking up, and as a result fails to see that the keeper has moved across to the far side of the area.  The ball goes straight into the empty goal to level the match.  3. Bobby McDonaldSigned for Man City for £270,000 in October 1980. The Aberdonian, who also played for Villa, Coventry and Oxford was a consistent regular amassing ninety-six League appearances and netting eleven times. He went to Oxford in September 1983 and won a Third Division medal in his first season, followed by a Second Division medal in 1984-85. In League fixtures with Oxford he made ninety-four appearances and scored fourteen goals. He went to Leeds on a month’s loan in February 1987, before joining them in a £25,000 deal to help United’s push towards the Play-offs. 4. Colin HendryTwo years and 63 appearances in Manchester blue City's 'Braveheart' starred for Scotland at the 1998 World Cup and gave Ronaldo a run for his money in that never-to-be forgotten tournament opener in France. Won the Premiership with Blackburn and also played for Rangers. 5. Dave Ewing(10 May 1929 – July 1999) played in the centre half position for Man City. Ewing was born in Perthshire in May 1929. He was spotted playing for Luncarty Juniors by City, and signed for the Mancunians in 1949. However, it was another four years before he made his first team debut, against Man Utd on 3 January 1953. Overall he went on to make 279 appearances for City, scoring 1 goal. Played in the City team that lost and then won the FA Cup final in 1955 and 1956 respectively. Being a Scot there also had to be a dark side to Ewing's career at City... he also scored 10 own goals during his time with them. 6. Neil McNabStarted his career at Morton in 1972 before moving south .In 1983 he signed for £35,000 for City with whom he stayed until 1990. He was arguably City's player of the eighties, being voted Player of the Year in both the 1986-87 and 1988-89 seasons. A skilful and very combative defensive midfielder, Neil inspired a young team to promotion from the Second Division in 1989 He played 221 league matches for City and scored 16 goals. 7. Jim TolmieHe started his career at Morton and made his senior debut on 28 October 1978. Then he was sold to Lokern in Belgium in 1981, playing 18 games without scoring before returning to Britain in 1983. Tolmie was signed by Billy McNeill for City from Lokeren for £30,000. Jim was the third signing in nine days made by McNeill, who had himself just joined City from Celtic He left City and spent a summer playing in Sweden, before returning to Morton in 1991. He retired in 1994. 8. Gerry GowFondly remembered at City despite only 26 appearances for them in the early 80's. Gow ended up making 375 appearances for Bristol City in the Football League. After his time at Bristol City he played for City and Rotherhambefore transferring to Burnley in August 1983 He then moved to Yeovil where he was player manager for a time.  9. Denis LawThe back-heeled goal at Old Trafford for City that sent his old club Manchester United down to the old English Second Division in 1974 was probably his worst football memory and City fan's best memory of the mercurial Aberdonian. A Scottish International goalscoring legend who appeared for the Dark Blues at the 1974 World Cup and scored many memorable goals for both sides of the Mancunian divide. 10. Asa HartfordRichard 'Asa' Hartford (born 24 October 1950 in Clydebank) was a Scottish international midfielder who became famous for failing a medical examination due to the discovery of a heart condition which put paid to a high profile transfer to Leeds in November 1971. Hartford clocked up nearly 80 appearances for City in a three year spell in the 80's and was a consistent performer for his country. 11. Tommy HutchisonBorn in Cardenden, Fife and a former Alloa and Blackpool player ' Hutch ' scored at both ends, equalising his first half diving header with a deflection from a Hoddle Free Kick, in the first game of the 1981 FA Cup final against Spurs which ended 1-1 with City losing the replay 3-2. The gangly winger was the oldest player on the park in the first game of the 1981 FA Cup final and could be brilliant and frustrating in equal measure at both club and international level throughout a long career. He was still playing at 42 in the lower English leagues after leaving City before retiring a year later. SubsPaul DickovFormer Arsenal protégé who was a star for the Scotland Under 17 side that reached the final of the Youth World Cup in the late 80's before losing to Saudi Arabia, who later admitted playing overage players in the Scotland-based tournament. Dickov did a fair shift as a City player over five years as a regular and later went on to manage nearby Oldham Athletic. Derek ParlaneFormer Rangers star of the 1970's who ended up netting a few memorable goals while at City. Netted 20 goals in 48 appearances for City from 1983-85 and regarded as another good buy from north of the border. Played for Rangers 1970-1980.
